Responding to Poverty
In Deuteronomy 15:11 we are told that “there will never cease to be poor in the land.” Poverty is a reality that is part of our fallen world and something that we are all called to respond to. The verse concludes with “Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.”
It is easy to become overwhelmed by the problem of poverty, stretching from our own communities to every corner of the globe. Some people live in poverty due to being oppressed by others, some due to natural disasters and calamities while others, such as widows and orphans, due to the loss of a breadwinner in their home. The response to each circumstance is different. While we are commanded to respond to poverty, it takes wisdom to provide real help to people suffering in poverty. Many well intentioned programs fall short of offering truly helpful assistance in lifting people out of poverty. It is Unite 4 Africa’s mission to truly meet the needs of the poor physically, emotionally and spiritually in ways that promote local accountability and that are self-sustaining. Please consider partnering with Unite 4 Africa as we seek to open wide our hands to lift individuals and communities out of poverty in Africa.
